PROJECT: Badu Arts Centre, Torres Strait
PROJECT TYPE: Indigenous Community Infrastructure
LOCATION: Australia
PARTNER: SJB, Tract
CLIENT: Badu Arts Centre
An indigenous arts centre in the Torres Strait.

AWF Network Partners SJB and Tract Consultants are collaborating to design a new art centre for Badu Island in Australia’s Torres Strait.

Badu artists are recognised around the world, but work in a building that is hot, poorly ventilated and unsuitable for storing cultural artefacts and fragile arts materials.

SJB’s building design will provide a safer, better ventilated, more climate and community responsive building incorporating workshops and studios, metal casting facilities, a keeping place for cultural materials, administration area, gallery and café.

Tract’s landscape design provides an outdoor ceremonial space with opportunities for gathering, dance and performance, outdoor cooking, performance and peaceful enjoyment.

This new building provides economic and cultural opportunities for a proud and proactive community in Australia's far north.
